Davidson NC History
The Town of Davidson officially came into being in 1891. It was previously incorporated as the “Town of Davidson College” in 1879, and before then was referred to simply as “Davidson College”. A walk in historic Davidson is a step back in time.
Main Street has wide, brick sidewalks, hanging flower baskets, and tree-lined walks and streets characterize both the campus and town. In 1991, Davidson NC expanded eastward and other additions boosted the Davidson town limits to 4.5 square miles. The community library has a large green space used for pick-up football games, play dates, festivals, jugglers, croquet matches and outdoor concerts.
Davidson is built for pedestrians, bike riders with connectivity and walkable streets , not for cars. Drive-thrus aren’t allowed in Davidson.

Davidson College has been and continues to be central to life in Davidson. Enjoy canoeing or kayaking in Lake Davidson and Lake Cornelius. Take a hike along the Sterling Martin Trail, and put in at the launch at Lake Davidson Nature Preserve just behind Davidson Day School. Since there are no motorboats allowed, Lake Davidson offers a serene place to paddle, and in the center of the lake are several small islands, all designated wildlife sanctuaries but perfect to explore.
